Trump’s Popularity Is Slipping in Rural America

Outside the Morgan County fair in McConnelsville, in a rural swath of Ohio that fervently backed U.S. President Donald Trump in last year’s election, ticket seller John Wilson quietly counts off a handful of disappointments with the man he helped elect.

The 70-year-old retired banker said he is unhappy with infighting and turnover in the White House. He does not like Trump’s penchant for traveling to his personal golf resorts. He wishes the president would do more to fix the healthcare system, and he worries that Trump might back down from his promise to force illegal immigrants out of the country.

“Every president makes mistakes,” Wilson said. “But if you add one on top of one, on top of another one, on top of another, there’s just a limit.”

Trump, who inspired millions of supporters last year in places like Morgan County, has been losing his grip on rural America.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll, the Republican president’s popularity is eroding in small towns and rural communities where 15 percent of the country’s population lives. The poll of more than 15,000 adults in “non-metro” areas shows that they are now as likely to disapprove of Trump as they are to approve of him.

In September, 47 percent of people in non-metro areas approved of Trump while 47 percent disapproved. That is down from Trump’s first four weeks in office, when 55 percent said they approved of the president while 39 percent disapproved.

The poll found that Trump has lost support in rural areas among men, whites and people who never went to college. He lost support with rural Republicans and rural voters who supported him on Election Day.

And while Trump still gets relatively high marks in the poll for his handling of the economy and national security, rural Americans are increasingly unhappy with Trump’s record on immigration, a central part of his presidential campaign.

Forty-seven percent of rural Americans said in September they approved of the president’s handling of immigration, down from 56 percent during his first month in office.

Poll respondents who were interviewed by Reuters gave different reasons for their dissatisfaction with the president on immigration.

A few said they are tired of waiting for Trump to make good on his promise to build a wall along America’s southern border, while others said they were uncomfortable with his administration’s efforts to restrict travel into the United States.

“There should be some sort of compromise between a free flow of people over the border and something that’s more controlled,” said Drew Carlson, 19, of Warrensburg, Missouri, who took the poll.

But Trump’s “constant fixation on deportation is a little bit unsettling to me.”

The Trump administration would not comment about the Reuters/Ipsos poll. (For a graphic depicting poll results, see: http://tmsnrt.rs/2yuVIun)

To be sure, Trump is still much more popular in rural America than he is elsewhere.

Since he took office, “I like him less, but I support him more,” said Robert Cody, 87, a retired chemical engineer from Bartlesville, Oklahoma who took the poll.

Cody said that Trump may rankle some people with the way he talks and tweets, but it is a small price to pay for a president who will fight to strip away government regulations and strengthen the border.

2017 World Series of Poker

After knocking on the door so many times, Tommy Le finally kicked it in this week to win his first World Series of Poker bracelet.

Heading into this year’s World Series of Poker, Le had made the final table in five different WSOP Omaha tournaments. Each time, he came up short in his attempt to win a bracelet. That changed last week after Le outlasted the rest of the 428-player field in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Eight-Handed Championship.

Not only did Le get the coveted WSOP bracelet for the win, but he also netted $938,732. He now has 19 career WSOP cashes totaling just over $2.5 million

The most interesting tournament on last week’s World Series of Poker schedule was a new event, the $2,500 Big Bet Mix. The new addition to the WSOP is a mixed event player’s dream, with seven poker variations included. The usual games are there, with No-Limit Hold’em, two kinds of Pot Limit Omaha and two kinds of 2-7 Lowball.

The outlier is the inclusion of Five-Card Draw and Big O, which you’ll be hard-pressed to find in any other event at the Rio this month.

The Big Bet Mix drew only 197 players, and at the end, Austrian Jens Lakemeier was the last man standing. The top hand of the final table was a Five-Card Draw hand during which Lakemeier had only four outs and drew a Queen to spike a Full House and send two of his opponents to the rail. For the win, he collected his first WSOP bracelet and $112,232.

A quick check on the Player of the Year (POY) standings finds a new name on top: Ryan Hughes with 758.74 points. The two-time WSOP bracelet winner is still looking for his first tournament win this year after making the final table in four events. Including the four final tables, Hughes has cashed 14 times so far at the WSOP, totaling 190,992.

Trailing Hughes in the POY standings are John Racener with 729.92 points and John Monnette with 697.75. Racener won his first WSOP bracelet in the $10,000 Dealers Choice Six-Handed Championship and has cashed 14 times as well so far.

NBA Summer League 2017 Live

The NBA Utah Summer League will go into full swing on Monday as the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and Utah Jazz are the four teams competing in Utah. Coverage of the Utah Jazz Summer League begins 7 p.m. ET July 3 on NBA TV. You can also watch the games online at WatchESPN.

All four teams will play against one another over a four-day period at the Huntsman Basketball Facility, which is located at the University of Utah campus. Each team will play one another once over a four-day period.

The first game of the evening, which is arguably the most-anticipated matchup, is between the 76ers point guard Markelle Fultz and Celtics forward Jayson Tatum at 7 p.m. Boston originally had the No. 1-overall pick but decided to trade that selection to Philadelphia, giving up the opportunity to draft Fultz. The 76ers gave up their 2017 and 2018 draft picks to trade up.

The New York Knicks’ post-Phil Jackson Era begins with Frank Ntilikina and a host of intriguing young players (you can find the complete roster for every team here). No. 6 pick Jonathan Isaac, who many regarded as this draft’s highest-upside player, gets his career started in front of the home-town fans. And then there’s Luke Kennard and Bam Adebayo, who will look to prove they deserved to be lottery picks.

Of course, while we know those guys will be on NBA rosters come October, perhaps the more intriguing part of Summer League is the dozens of guys fighting for a contract or even a spot on a D-League team. These showcases aren’t always the most beautiful displays of basketball, but they often shine a light on valuable role players who were otherwise largely unknown. It’s not only a good chance for fans to quell their thirst for basketball, it’s a prime opportunity for young players to prove they belong.

This will mark Pacquiao’s third fight since his infamous bout with Floyd Mayweather in 2015. The 38-year old went 2-0 in 2016, decisively defeating Timothy Bradley Jr., followed by a win over Jessie Vargas where Pacquiao reclaimed the WBO welterweight title that he lost to Mayweather. Other events on the card include Shane Mosley Jr. and Michael Conlan defending their super middleweight and super bantamweight titles, respectively. Conlan is a huge favorite over Jarrett Owen in his fight, while oddsmakers are giving David Toussaint a fighting chance against Mosley Jr. Jerwin Ancajas is also a heavy favorite over Teiru Kinoshita to hold onto his super flyweight belt, it is anticipated to be a breakout fight for Ancajas. Here’s how the full card shakes out.

Manny Pacquiao will defend his WBO welterweight title against Jeff Horn at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia, on Sunday.

The main card will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday local time, according to the Courier Mail, but because of the 14-hour time difference, it will take place at around 9 p.m. ET on Saturday (2 a.m. BST in the UK).

Former school teacher Horn, 29, has nine years on the 38-year-old Pacquiao, but the Filipino is unquestionably the biggest opponent in his career, and he’s a real underdog heading into the clash.

Welcome to our live coverage of the U21 Euro 2017 final between Germany and Spain. Kick off at the Krakow stadium in Poland is 20:45 CEST and we’ll be bringing you all the latest news throughout the day.

Two of the world’s most dominant footballing nations in Germany and Spain are set to meet in the final of the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship at the Stadion Cracovia in Krakow. While Spain will be looking to match Italy’s record and win the tournament for the fifth time, Germany will be looking to win only their second title having won it in 2009.

From the start of the tournament, Germany and Spain were expected to go all the way and while both teams have been exceptional so far, one team is going to be disappointed tonight. As expected Spain topped their group as they breezed past every opponent in the group stage while Germany had to settle for second place in their group after they lost their final group stage match against Italy.

In the semi-final, Germany needed penalties against England to book their place in the final after the match ended 2-2 after extra time. Spain faced no problem in their semi-final against Italy as Saul Níguez’s hat trick sent them to the finals.

The Spaniards have a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of the Euro U21 final but Germany might have to do without Davie Selke, who picked up an injury in the semi-finals against England. The fitness of Niklas Stark is also a concern for Germany as he left training early.

A lot of people are favouring Spain to get the win over Germany tonight but Germany coach Stefan Kuntz insists that his Germany are ready to cause an upset and said that his players have done a good job for their country so far.

Germany will face Spain in the final of the 2017 UEFA U21 European Championship on Friday, June 30, after both teams won their semi-final matches on Tuesday.

BET Awards 2017

It’s almost time for the 2017 BET Awards and it’s sure to be a crazy night with Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones hosting and a ton of incredible performances from some of your favorite artists. However, if you don’t have a TV you probably need to know how to stream the 2017 BET awards. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

BET Awards 2017 Live Stream

Baseball Hall of Fame 2017 Live stream

The easiest way to livestream the award show is with the BET NOW app, which allows you to stream the ceremony as it’s happening. The app is free to download, but you will need to log in with a TV provider. If you don’t have a log in, it might be time to start asking around, as this seems to be the only way to livestream the actual award show.

However, if this year’s award ceremony is the same as last year’s, you can probably find a livestream of the red carpet before the show and then see what’s happening backstage on BET.com. Besides that, though, you’ll just have to follow along on social media to see what’s going on and trust me, there will be a lot going on. According to Business Wire, viewers can expect performances by Bruno Mars, Future, Migos, Trey Songz, and Tamar Braxton.

The list of presenters is also star-studded and includes the likes of Yara Shahidi, Cardi B, Issa Rae, Jamie Foxx, La La Anthony, Trevor Noah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah, just to name a few.

Unsurprisingly, the nominees are also some of the best in the business. Beyoncé swept the nominations this year with a total of seven nods, including “Best Collaboration” with Kendrick Lamar for “Freedom.” While Queen B will most likely not be in attendance, since she reportedly just gave birth to her twins, fans are still expecting to see her walk away with all the awards that she so deserves.

Bruno Mars also got a plethora of nominations, coming in with a total five, including “Album of the Year.” Beyoncé’s sister, Solange Knowles, received four nominations and will face-off against her sister for the “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist” award. Chance the Rapper and Migos also received four nominations.

The night will be a big one for Chance, who will also be recognized with the Humanitarian Award for Supporting Educational and Social Initiatives Award. New Edition will also be honored with the Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. BET aired a three-night biopic event about the R&B group earlier this year.

You can find out who wins the most awards and see all the amazing performances when the 2017 BET Awards airs on Sunday, June 25 starting at 8 p.m. ET on BET.

The 2017 BET Awards are set to be a star-studded night, and with Leslie Jones at the helm, it’ll no doubt be a feel-good, funny one as well.

“Make sure to let everybody know, I wanna promote joy for the show,” the Saturday Night Live veteran said during a conference call Wednesday, according to USA Today. “I want everybody to come to this show to have a good time.”

Here’s a few things to know about the BET Awards, taking place on Sunday, June 25th.

Jones is ready to laugh off any potential flubs.
Following this year’s Oscars Best Picture debacle, Jones said she’s steeling herself for possible mistakes she might make onstage. “I will not be announcing any of the winners, so let’s hope I will not be in a situation” like Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty’s La La Land/Moonlight mix-up,” she said during the conference call. This is the Ghostbusters star’s first major awards show hosting gig.

TCU vs Florida

This isn’t the position the Florida baseball team wanted to be in after opening the College World Series with two wins. Backs against the wall suddenly, season on the brink yet again.

But as far as Plan Bs go, the No. 3-seeded Gators have quite a safety net to call upon Saturday night as they take on No. 6 TCU for the third time in Omaha, Neb., in a winner-take-all rematch to determine who advances to the College World Series finals.

Ace right-hander Alex Faedo will return to the mound looking to continue his dominant postseason as the Gators (49-19) and TCU (50-17) clash again at 8 p.m. ET at TD Ameritrade Park following the Horned Frogs’ 9-2 win Friday night over Florida to stave off elimination.

“I think our backs have been against the wall the whole year to be honest with you,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said after the loss Friday night. “It’s been well documented. We’ve had 18 one-run wins. Nothing’s come easy to this team this year. We’ve just had to battle and scratch and claw and fight for everything we had. And if you told me we had one game to win and you got Faedo on the mound and (Tyler) Dyson, who has emerged, and (Michael) Byrne fresh, I’ll take my chances.”

RELATED: Florida in familiar position heading into another postseason elimination game

Round three between the teams features the same pitching matchup as their College World Series opener last Sunday night, when Faedo (8-2, 2.40 ERA, 146 strikeouts and 38 walks in 116 1/3 innings) got the best of TCU and redshirt sophomore righty Jared Janczak (9-1, 2.19 ERA, 95 strikeouts and 24 walks in 86 1/3 innings) in a 3-0 win.

Faedo, the No. 18 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers, has been sublime so far in the NCAA tournament. He’s allowed 1 run over 20 innings with 33 strikeouts in four appearances, including giving up just 2 hits and 2 walks with 11 Ks over seven scoreless innings in that first start against the Horned Frogs.

He and mound mate Brady Singer had staked the Gators to a 2-0 start in Omaha while TCU has had to scrap its way back through the losers bracket with wins over Texas A&M (4-1), No. 7 Louisville (4-3) and then the Gators on Friday night.

Like O’Sullivan mentioned, Florida has been in this position before this postseason. The Gators were pushed to a winner-take-all finale in both the NCAA Regionals against Bethune-Cookman and the Super Regionals against Wake Forest, prevailing both times.

And as he also mentioned, in addition to Faedo, Florida has a fresh bullpen with closer Michael Byrne (1.78 ERA, 17 saves, 88 strikeouts and 15 walks in 70 2/3 innings) and emerging postseason star Tyler Dyson (3-0, 3.55 ERA), who has allowed just 2 hits in 8 1/3 scoreless innings this NCAA tournament, both available.

The other half of the bracket is also still undecided as No. 4 LSU and No. 1 Oregon State will play at 3 p.m. Saturday to determine who moves on to the championship series against the winner of Florida and TCU.

“We’ve got four teams left with one loss. (Saturday) should be very interesting,” O’Sullivan said. “Obviously we’ve got our number one going. Michael Byrne is fresh and Tyler Dyson is fresh, and it should be an interesting couple games. Looking forward to it.”

It’s not just about the pitching, though.

Florida is batting a meager .200 (19 for 95) with 10 total runs through its three College World Series games, falling prone to the same offensive slumps that have sprung up all season.

“I don’t know what causes it or anything. But tomorrow is just another day. I don’t really care what happened in the past somewhere. Doesn’t really matter. Everyone has one loss now,” catcher Mike Rivera said Friday night. “We just need to play better tomorrow. And get another chance. We’re still breathing, so that’s good.”

As for TCU, Janczak has been the team’s stalwart on the mound all season. He only last four innings in the CWS opener Sunday night, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks to Florida, but his track record is impressive nonetheless.

“I have full confidence in our pitching staff. We just need to do it for another day,” Horned Frogs coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “(Janczak) says he feels great. … He’s pitched on one less day’s rest this year before. If he’s going to ever play pro ball, he’ll have to get used to it every five days. I think he’ll be fine. He’ll give us a chance. If he just fills up the strike zone, he’ll give us a great chance.
